okay so we are recording go ahead it's all yours thank you very much for having me before I actually get started I want the one in before I even get started of it I'm going to give another thank you to Ashley for helping monitor the chat and going over questions I promise we will do our best to get through all the questions one moment please while I share my screen with you I do have a presentation to share can you all see that and is a slide of presentation perfect okay I can I just say that I love them and lets me see all your faces and nodding or smiling start Michelle again my name is Sachi Pratt IMDb Statewide recruitment manager for the Department of Parks and Recreation otherwise known as California state parks and thank you for sharing your time thank you Doctor Chavez and Tracy for inviting me today to share about the different opportunities going on so let's go ahead and get started first step is the housekeeping you heard dr. Chavez mention that this presentation is being recorded please type your questions in the chat and Ashley been a monitor that we will have opportunity for more questions at the end of the project presentation as well if you don't happen to have you're doing this from your phone it might be a little more difficult to type in the session so we'll have an opportunity at the end okay I bet it is being recorded to share with people that will not be participating during this timeframe or anyone that feels that they you know may have missed something that they want to catch up on so thank you for that hey so today we're going to go over the who what why and when's of the working for the State of California first workforce planning and recruitment office why you might consider a job or career California State Park how to obtain a job with a B Department and hope I'm sorry of course I forgot to turn off my phone B what what types of careers are available we I know a common thought is that we are Rangers but we offered so much more than that so we're going to go over that today and we're 200 state parks all over the state of California and where some are near you and of course we'll go over the questions hey y'all ready Linda Park Supply the recruitment team is a service customer service base office we offer all types of assistance from creating a building your resume you too over any questions you may have or to schedule a one-on-one with you as well you can find all the information I'm going to share with you today at live the parks life.com at is the jobs pay for California State Park so why work for the state of California California state parks number one thing I can think of is our mission we are hair into the health of Californians protecting our precious resources and I know that more and more is important as to where people work they want to know that the mission of the department or ever they whether it's private or public sector that there is something that they share in that value system and I think the values in the mission of the Department of Parks and Recreation is something that everyone can agree with and that are cultural our historical and our environmental resources are important and need to be protected and share for generations to come and that is definitely the California State Park kidding it's really about those benefits right of the compensation we offer a very competitive salaries we offer all different types of opportunities to poor pay differentials everything from bilingual pay to cost of living pay differentials in the high-rent areas so you can see here there's a list and there is much more to this as well as Retirement health benefits medical Vision Dental for yourself your family your dependents that includes a foster children and adopted common law marriages etcetera so it sits as long as they are defined as a dependent with you they can be covered as well you have a fantastic retirement of paid sick leave pay vacations paid holiday time off paid family leave and so much more we also are it's a very important to my eye that we recruit a diverse workplace it's important that we are sharing the message of the opportunities you can find at California state parks and all over the state and all the different communities that there are and we wanted a Workforce that is reflective of California and you can in fact improve the lives of others it you can prove hide and Inspire others to experience the outdoors there is study after study that shows that being outside experiencing nature Recreation experiences really do have many health benefits and can be a part of that no matter at what level you are in fact a part of that we s California state parks employees take pride in that no matter what from our accountants to our Rangers to our facilities and maintenance to our every single one of us plays a part in improving the lives of all Californians get to experience something with California State Park Delaware I'm in a little while okay so real quick the steps to apply to a state job so don't worry about John and down nose because this is a real General overview if you want to learn more in-depth steps we do offer webinars does a we also have recordings the previous webinars that you can spend to us as well but let's go over the checklist real quick first you want to create a calcareers account which hotel careers account you can save documents here like resume certificates any kind of licenses or other application templates that you develop for different jobs because you can in fact the play for multiple jobs through using your Calpers account in that very my advice to people is always getting where you can fit in and then you can decide as to where you want to move up the ladder or can infect have different templates for those applications you can save them here on your calculators account of some of the benefits to having a tail. Account is you can contact contacted by employers through this get an email about upcoming jobs you can stay up-to-date on the various job opportunities that are out there from multiple different departments and you can submit your application template at the click of a button you'll notice on job bulletin when it says apply you can click the button and intellect it'll pull your application from your account next step to get a state job Step 2 is to establish list eligibility hi all hiring managers must pool from a list of eligible higher to get on that list you got to take an exam and before you stress out too much the exam and are typically self self babe you a self-assessment so you're just going to there can be multiple choice as to the level of experience that you have in that particular field level of expertise if it's a not a multiple choice exam or self-assessment it's usually asking questions about that career field and what your experience is so if you had made the decision based on your experience to take that chances are you will do very well and then again you can in fact Join one of our workshops to show you how to do the different types of exams that are available and how to etcetera and then I have a question you know when you are about the testing could you tell us you know what is reachable and you know so I take you know where do I have to be in order for me to be reachable to to compete for a job that's a great question usually it's the top 3 rankings now where are you what do you score on that isn't necessarily how well you did it's all these things are considered for instance how many people took the exam and how well everyone else is so if you are you could do really well on exam if a lot of people took the exam it'll it could slip you into a different ranking system because it was an average score and usually the top-ranked go to people that have extra points due to their veteran status and I'll go over that a little bit later as well there is a been or being a veteran and you can infer apply for the Veterans Preference benefit and that will automatically establish you in first ranking as long as you can pass the exam with a 70% or better so there's a lot of factors that go into where you rank and honestly the hiring manager can determine has a lot of leeway into into hiring you betta I choose where you're at so if as long as you're reachable you can in fact get hired for a position despite your ranking and it's different for different classifications some applications only have three ranking other class Cajun will have 8 rankings up to 8 so it all depends on the classification how many people applied and what they what the established ranking is through calhr but honestly if you review the study guide that is on the example attuned or what the scope of the exam will be and you do that you will do well so people I advise you don't they the ranking don't think about that think about your experience and what you know and and emphasizing on that and I promise you will be well okay so step 3 applying for the job find a lot of positions of we can find all of our positions at Logan Park life.com and you can apply for vacancies there and there are job bulletins for different vacancies and that will give you the directions on how to apply whether it's online or through the mail or even in person not now through covered restrictions but typically there are in person application opportunity every applique in must be submitted on a standard 678 application form this is the official application form for the State of California and this is for all exams and all vacancies so that when you mail want to jot down a note standard 6784 the reason we're all here to go over all the upcoming career path opportunities at California state parks number one is we are hiring we have over 300 vacancies that we want to fill throughout the state the department went through a reorganization and through that reorganization we actually created jobs not got rid of them so IS300 vacancies are on top of regular attrition so people of retiring people leaving the department people getting promoted or people leaving the state for whatever reason those vacancies Arthur are irregular vacancies but we have an additional 300 that we need to fill so and this is the route the entire state in Courage you all to explore live apart slide to discover what opportunities I do impact away you be honest with you December it's December it's the holidays so if you click on that right now you're going to see not as many vacancies available right now it is slow to post right now but usually the list is on a daily basis so you are definitely going to see those vacancies after the holidays for for existing vacancies we can share some links throughout his presentation queso the types of careers you can find at California state parks we have positions available wide-area study so no matter what your education level or what you decided to go through in your studies you can in fact find something here that will match or you hundreds of different opportunities available at all experience levels and education levels in 280 different locations throughout the state we are in fact the largest state park system in the nation I'm so we have tons of options and career path opportunities and here's just an example of some of that so for instance if you wanted to go stem weather was Sciences or it we have a place for you and Humanities we have history or social studies there's a place for you law enforcement administrative positions like human resources accounting budget or policymakers we have that or if you prefer working with your hands Outdoors using those carpentry skills for instance we do have experience I'm sorry place for you to sit still season maintenance so tons of options and career path opportunities and again the minimum qualifications are going to be different for each classification But whichever series you decide to get into there are opportunity he's from entry-level to supervisory and managerial positions available so whichever Pappy take you have a chance to go in through your first step with limited experience or education and work your way all the way up to the top they're also when you are considering the different Pathways there are ways to get in through Lee which is the limited exam and application program and this is a pro grab that will let people with different skill-sets handicapped people to get in through a different examination process and I think Ashley sharing a link with you there MLB also the Veterans Preference benefit which I spoke of earlier what this does is it lets you push up to the first ranking there if you can in fact pass with a seventy percent better better all you need is a copy of your DD-214 and this a single-page form that asks going to share the link with you there as well so if I can't emphasize sing it is that park has different past and for all types of different experiences and all types of different education levels hey so what are some of those paths the environmental scientist for instance we help protect the environment you'll collect samples and data and use this data to help create policies or procedures to help clean polluted air and protect you in and of course Environmental Studies can include studies on Plants Wildlife nature and health human health impacts happen to be pictures of some environmental scientist out in the field during their work that first picture with the poppies that someone with native plants the second picture is the Delta with invasive plants of course the effects of Mono Lake in that bottom third picture the minimum qualifications to be an environmental scientist a Bachelors of Science in any of the related fields from biological to Public Health or any closely related as agrees in science and this one requires successfully passing an exam this exam is available online 24/7 and this is an example of I think it's seven questions where you create narratives a describing your experience with with any of the Gibb work here in for environmental scientist and they're their there does happen to be some vacancies Ashley's going to share including internships at specific parts okay next step is the state park interpreter and interpreter will interpret the natural historical cultural significance of our most precious resources in other words they tell our story so you have examples here are some of their in the left I believe that's at Fort Ross explaining because we did have to go online usually they'll tell the story to Park Visitor than person but we've gone online restriction actually explaining what life was like for indigenous people native people they're here for a while and they're in the bottom corner is someone's going over the migration of butterflies the minimum qualifications for a state park interpreter are one year of experience and research and graduation from college with a degree in anything from interpretation social sciences Communications are other related field they do take theater major still I knows two people who are theater majors and on fact interpreter and they are actually in the best of it okay and then law enforcement are State Park peace officers Rangers and lifeguards both are Rangers and lifeguards are law enforcement for parks in fact they have the highest level of Authority for the State of California they are State Police they can go 50 miles into Oregon or Nevada or Arizona as a state police officers and they are doing all the work that on any lawn I would tell you they are on the front lines of protection for public law enforcement state parks as a state park peace officer you'll learn interpretation Park and Campground management and much more to protect our visitors and work as First Responders educate visitors to interpretation and education programs so they're more than just law enforcement they do they are the face of the parks and I guess that's why so many people think that's all we are but as you can hear there's so much more the minimum qualifications for s u p o r angel or a lifeguard is 18 years of age 60 College units pass a comprehensive background check and if you want to be a lifeguard you also need six months of Open Water lifeguarding experience so that's like a lake or river or something that's open I'm not a pool necessarily we do you can in fact join the academy with no previous experience at all the academy is 8 months long are you are considered a full an employee at that point so you will get all the pay and benefits that any employee would get as a today and you can in fact apply to become a Cadet once a year in French if you join our mailing list you can receive a notification as to when the next opportunity is available you can also sign up to join one of our Rangers are lifeguards on right along you can text me what a day the life is like for a ranger or Lifeguard by joining our Ride Along request lit now it's right now through covid-19 can't do that but we do have a pending waiting list for this and Ashley will share at least for these as well okay next step is the analyst series these are your office administrative type jobs things like a Park and Recreations Swiss bakery in fact I can work with Grant it's a help for infants in our office of Branson local Services what are Park and records does is provide grants to local communities to build parks in park poor areas as a work with community-based organizations as well and the community at large so if there's any grants aren't we given from the state of California immigration it requires that not only is there an application from a city or nonprofit but in fact the community-at-large had a role in determining where the park is that and what type of amenities purple have staff services analyst is the first level of the animal series and then is the associate program analyst what is their journey level you can also get jobs as a in accounting or budgets or Personnel Specialist or human resources and much more in the type of work that they'll do is developing record developing policies analyzing data making plantations and administering processing and here is an example of that job career path CC here the office technician is kind of like your level clerical work there take a lot of direction as to the type of things that are needed for the office and then is the first level staff services analyst a lot of guidance from senior-level or man positions then the journey level up to the manager the minimum requirements or the analyst series are a college degree or two to five years experience one of the things now about that college degree though is this is one of the series that has more flexibility in the all of these positions if you see a college degree is needed you can inbox substitute years of experience for the or that degree on a year-to-year basis so for instance a four-year degree requires 4 years experience at that level so you can come from private sector working in a different job and Skip some of these steps based on your experience and when I do see that a lot and things like I'm working at a doctor's office for instance or because that is dealing you you are working a lot of with them I'm looking at different confidential information and making determination so you do see people from that type of world coming into government work and specifically with nextstep Communications operator start a quote here because I was so good the state park peace officer Ranger lifeguards protector parts and it's our job to protect them what they do is they are our kind of like are 911 dispatchers and they work with California state parks the Department of Fish and Wildlife and Telfair protect law enforcement Park visitors and are state parks so the eyes and ears of state parks there for us and great locations to work at norcom insurcomm Northern California Center and Southern California Communication Center the northern one is located in Sacramento County and Rancho Cordova at Prairie City OHV and that is the off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area and they Southern California Communication Center is located at Perris Lake in Riverside minimum qualifications include graduation from 12th grade or an equivalent and 2 years of contact with the public now it's something important to know about Communications operator is they are under the same Union as law enforcement so lot of those pay differential extra pay extra permit benefits that are law enforcement get so do our communication operators next up is facilities and maintenance so for all the people who love to work with their hands have those skill set we have opportunity as well as they clean build restore and protect our state parks we have Park maintenance Chief still laborers groundskeepers landscape definitions of Park maintenance worker series the minimum qualifications for These Guys. These people using a California driver's license usually not all of them 18 years of age a high school diploma or equivalency 1 2 3 years experience depending on which job so if you are entry-level Park maintenance assistant I believe that in six months the worker one and twos is one year and the supervisor is 3 years go up the years of experience are needed and again outside experience does count and the next we also have State Park equipment operators heavy equipment Canik electricians automobile mechanics these jobs require special certifications and licenses through the state of California but you can in fact with the additional years of experience depending on the specific classification that you are in fact wanting to join and a special announcement if I'm a plug myself tomorrow my team is actually host the webinar for facilities of Park and maintenance hiring exam and career classification you can it is tomorrow at 1 and I believe Ashley is going to share the link to I get tickets to that it is free we do have people registered through Eventbrite and for the students are Juniors and seniors there's opportunity as well for you and that is those entry level positions the seasonal AIDS include Park Parkade maintenance age history a internship specific to part and many more there's a lot of flexibility with seasonal hires there is no exam needed so that right there allows so much more freedom in how to how to apply and how to get hired you can attack apply directly and in some cases you can get hired on the spot at some parks sanparks will have a one day. airfare for instance and just take all the applications in do the interviews right there same day and you can get hired on the spot for some of these positions you can negotiate your work hours with the hiring manager you can also negotiate how your duty statement is built so for instance if you need specific experience with a particular field because you want to build a you know down your career path you can get back to work with your hiring now or editing. Judy statement to to fill that mean while the department doesn't have a specific I'm sorry an official internship program you can work with hiring manager to have a paid internship as a seasonal Aid their seasonal as usually about 13 to $15 per hour so that's why it's a sin. You have no choice you have to get paid but if you have an internship need at your school you can pack to work with the hiring manager to gain that experience to sign off on the paperwork and your hiring manager can work with can cats have that got paid in credit there for you if you check out live the parks life.com you can see how you can apply what bacon sees are available oops there we go and that is a picture of the Railroad Museum because we happen to have a vacancy there right now so if you do in fact visit with a part that you will see that vacancy I think Ashley was that one of the links I shared with you I don't recall shared about all of them and I apologize the chat is getting a little cluttered I wish I'm so glad I can see right now yes there's definitely a lot of opportunity and this is a fantastic way to get your foot in the door the game that experience over half the staff at parks and rec maybe over half the staff for law enforcement they started off this way it's been with our art we have they started off at through seasonal if it's a fantastic way you gain so much experience you learn so much about park operations and you have a mentor right there people generally like to help other people through their career and help me do a tidbit of advice here and there and you can find that as a seasonal from whatever career path you want because they're all right there at the park with you whether it's law enforcement The Sciences Etc you can in fact find someone there to help you through that mentoring or or just gaining experience as a seasonal I think this is fantastic way to start off minimum qualifications usually 18 years of age there are 17 year olds that I'm having back button higher as well so Juniors and seniors do you have a shot at being a as seasonal hey and bees are the state parks near you Brannan Island to Stow Lake I said some of them State Park property this is undeveloped land usually not visited by Park visitors as well but they we still need staff to do in fact maintain the property and in or that it's being protected and or some sometimes it's like a Delta Meadows that's where I'm going all scientist will go to impact to their their data collection as well some of these acronyms here SRA that stands for state recreational area sh-t that is State Historic Park srva that's recreational vehicle area it's not listed here though it's always be that is off highway vehicle parts at 4 Perry sick what city is and again 280 state parks of these are just the ones near you okay so before we actually get to the question I hope that you in fact do connect with us at recruiting at parks. I just thank you thank you very much I have a question so if you want to go ahead no I was just going to say for those of you that are still on I went to live the parks life.com and it disconnect you who is the the state Personnel Board and there are a lot of jobs on there I would really encourage everybody to take a look from the seasonal workers all the way to staff services analyst and it's really a great opportunity so make sure that you're that you're checking the website and looking and we are just oh my gosh we're just so grateful to you for this one a presentation and you covered a lot today and and I you know we're just so grateful that you're able to share this with our students and our families thank you I'm going to go ahead and stop and we can talk face-to-face virtually I have a question who's going to graduate when should I start applying if they want to start working after they graduate high school question my advice to anyone is always apply as soon as you the opportunity presents itself and I got kind of a long answer for you cuz this is a really vital if you ask a very important question vacancies have at most a 14 day window of when they're available it's usually 10 to 14 days when people post a conceive during that time Tunes are accepted for any particular position so it's if you see an opportunity do not hesitate to jump on that and submit your application because of that tight window frame we do know when the opportunity will present itself again it could be anywhere from a for instance an exam are exam to run in cycles and this is true for all of their online continuously our interpreter exam is rr1 is available only every five years and the two of the available every two to three years so and that's just example an example of a 1 cycle again Horseman is only open once a year for 3 months so when you see the opportunity do not hesitate to apply now the question about those about to graduate apply the rules are if a degree is required you can in fact apply and be eligible within six months of reaching out to great so if you're 6 months away from getting your you can in fact still apply you just have to have a degree when you actually start the job I For Those About to graduate high school there's flexibility on that as well if you meet the age requirement 17 18 but you're still see your Junior and you're 17 and a half years old you can in fact still be reachable for that and you do have to work a little harder as a 17 year old to be considered but I think imperson being proactive showing that you want the job I think you can. Have a have a shot at getting their job back because there's so much flexibility with those seasonal age and let me see and how long does the process take in a good year not 20/20 it could take in we're from three to six months before you actually hear anything and that's just it's a long process it's a really boring process to so applications have that 10 to 14 day window to all right nobody's looking at those applications until after the final filing day to ensure that everyone has a fair review so after the final filing date usually it is at the certifications office or the apartment very viewing making sure that everyone's eligible then they compiled a list and create a report to give to the hiring manager the hiring manager then is going to review all the applications that were eligible & Mather determinations that Mesa that back to the certification unit to get approval for any interviews or anything like that then the certification unit reviews that list and sends the okay who's okay and who's not for the interview for hiring manager then they start scheduling them out so best case scenario 3 months I've heard of it happening within 3 months but that's a best-case scenario typically is about six months can take up to a year and that's not unusual at all but again I don't don't put all your eggs in one basket apply apply apply in There and Everywhere when you go fishing you don't use one thing a bag throw your thing out and then leave and say you know okay it looks like you've answered all the questions that are students and families have thank you so much for this comprehensive look at how to get state jobs in the spa this is helpful not only for the students and families but to West as well in guiding them and thank you Miss Slovak for being there answering questions putting all of the links and you know how I just can't hide just can't tell you how grateful I really am sorry you both being here miss cross and I look forward to you know our partnership and you do a long-lasting partnership because you know Beach and the both of you we can really help our students you know get to their their occupations if they want and perhaps help this D appearances. thank you so much thank you and if we have any more questions on Tracy and I we can we can email you those questions and you know this we are friends so thank you everybody for being here really appreciated and I will convert the recording and have that posted College and Career website thank you all so much thank you for sharing your time with the Ashley thank you so much for making the connection I appreciate you so much you're awesome you're awesome have a wonderfully
