Hi Seniors!  This is Dr. Chavez and today what I want to discuss is financial aid... because many of you were going on to do the next steps after graduation will need the money to finance that next step. So I wanted to talk to you about the different types of federal student aid. One of those things is free money... so grants (you've heard of them), Pell Grants, Cal Grants, institutional grants... The other one is borrowed money... so that would be things like loans.  It would be subsidized and unsubsidized loans... and then the the third type is work-study, so that is money that you earn while you are on campus. When you fill out the FAFSA or the CDA (also known as the California Dream Act), you will know what you qualify for. All right. So will financial aid pay for all of my expenses?  This little clip here is from UCLA Financial Aid TV and it's really good because what they do is they go through the Financial Aid basics... and they talk to you about the different things that I'm going to talk to you about. It's really important when you make a decision to take a look at what kind of... what you're going to meet up with for cost of attendance.   Sometimes it's called COA and most of our students who do go to Community College (or are our nearby 4-year colleges like Sac State and UC Davis) often look at the expenses to see what it will cost them for a year to attend that particular college. So far our intents and purposes, what I'd like to do is to discuss CRC, UC Davis, and Sac State.  So if you look at this (this is CRC)... if live with your parents, it's about $16,544 per year.   Okay... but just keep in mind it's probably going to be a lot less, just because room and board... that varies if you don't pay anything at home... then you can you can leave off that $8700... and then miscellaneous... That's like when you go out and do things or... (you know) There's other things that... maybe it's the movies that you go to, or there's something (a particular event) that you go to.  Transportation... that's gas and maybe the maintenance of your car.  So that will vary a lot and it probably would go down for you if you live with your parents.  Now living off-campus is a different story because then you're going to be responsible for your room and board... so you're going to have to eat, and buy groceries, and pay for your rent.  Okay. So when you're looking at something like that it's about $24,000 per year. Now... if you look at the cost of attendance at Sac State, again, if you live with your parents, that's probably going to cost you the least. On campus, if you live in the dorms, it's going to cost you about $27,000... and then if you live in an apartment, it's going to be about $27,400. Okay... and when you look at this, across-the-board, where you see the differences are in the food, and the housing, and the transportation.  Okay... and I've included a link for you on the bottom so that you can always go there and see what the current cost is for all of this. At Davis... so it's a UC you're looking at... if you live on campus it's about $37,000 and, then, if you live off campus and apartments, about $31,000... and living at home it's about $29,000.   Again, keep in mind these are estimates because, sometimes, when you're living at home, you don't pay rent... or sometimes, when you're living off campus, you live with other people... so that it will decrease the cost of your part of the rent.  Now, if you are a non-resident living on campus, so people who are international students (llet me move out of the way so you can see it)... It's about $67,000. So it's really, really important that you make your choices accordingly, depending upon what kind of budget you have or where you want to go... but that's why it's always really important, if you want to have this kind of discussion, come talk with me.  I'll be more than happy to discuss it with you.  Okay. Alright.   So remember I talked about grants and how they are free monies... so I had mentioned initially about the Pell Grant and a Cal Grant... so when you get your financial aid package it will tell you: "Congratulations.  You got a Cal Grant." It'll either be A, B, or C... You don't have to figure out which one you qualify for... because what the Student Aid Commission is going to do is that they're going to look at your particular situation... how much their parents make, how many people are in the family, how many are going to college... all of that... and they're going to give you a grant accordingly.   Okay... and also just keep in mind with Cal Grant they do look at GPA... so we've already submitted that on you behalf... and all you've got to do is create an account on My Grant Info at CSAC or csac.ca.gov We'll do this later on after you finish filing the FAFSA, that way you can see what kind of Cal Grant you got. Okay... so if I ever refer to Web Grants 4 Students this is what I'm talking about (is the Cal grant). Alright.  Cal Grants can be used at 4-year or 2-year colleges, depending on what you get... and of course we can have a discussion about your particular situation once you get that financial package from your institution... But first (and foremost) we have to submit that FAFSA or CADAA... and I just want to remind you it's open now... so it opened up October 1st... and you have until March 2nd to submit... but please do not wait until the last minute to submit. Okay. So other grants that may become available for you... one is the Middle Class Scholarship and CSAC (the Student Aid Commission will let you know if you qualify for that).  Okay.  That's from the State of California.   You can have income and assets of $177,000 and usually this is something that the UCs and the CSUs will look at and package you for if you qualify. The other thing is the California College promise. It was formerly known as the BOG Fee Waiver... and what that is is that all eligible students can get assistance with their enrollment fees... But know this... Remember how we talked about the community colleges that we're partners with... So like CRC, ARC City Delta... they have free tuition for all people who are going to be attending... so long as you're in an incoming Freshman... you have at least 12 units and you fill out the FAFSA or the CADAA.  Okay. The other one I already talked about it's the Los Rios Promise Grant, and so... that one is offered for everybody... Okay.  So there is a California College Promise and then there's the Los Rios Promise, where everybody gets tuition for free.  Okay. At San Joaquin Delta College, I also mentioned that they offer free tuition for two (2) years and so that's a pretty good deal right there if you want to start at the community college. The university grants... I mentioned that initially and I called them institutional grants because they do come from the institution itself, so UC will have their own (depending upon campus)... the CSU per campus will have their own, so you'll see this in your package if you qualify. And then there's also the Blue and Gold. That one is for UC... so if you make under $80,000 you may be eligible for that one.  So it'll all come in your financial aid package. Remember how we talked about the different types of... a Federal Work Study is where you work to get that money... so it's just like a regular job, and what happens is that it counts as your financial aid... so there is a set of jobs that you can apply for on-campus, say, for example, you work in the library, or the bookstore, or something like that... and what they do is that they pay you... and that is something that you apply towards your aid.  Okay.  So you get a regular paycheck... it's just that is part of your financial aid. Now the loans... Remember the ones that you have to pay back? They are available for you if you qualify for them.  There are both subsidized and unsubsidized loans.  So be careful with those because subsidized loans... that means you don't have any interest while you're in school... so you actually will pay for it later on and that will be when you graduate (about six months after)... and then the unsubsidized loan... that one... the accrual of interest will begin as soon as you get the money.  Okay. I had mentioned briefly about the Parent Loan and what that is is that it's based on your parents income and their credit.   So these are the types of loans that you commonly see.  They are pretty low interest for the sub and unsub loans that you will take. Then there are the scholarships. That's free monies too. Most of them are going to require the Letters of Recommendation, so it's really important.  Connect with your teachers now so that you can have a few Letters of Recommendation that you can send out there. I do have on my website, as well as through ParentSquare... You know some of the things that are available in terms of scholarships... So if you look at scholarships.com or you look at chegg.com/scholarships Let's see what else... fastweb.com unigo.com unigo.com niche.com Those are the websites I've been giving out for General Scholarships because they do have plenty of scholarships available. However, starting mid-January, I'll start posting the local websites.   Those are awesome because those are the ones that you get locally and they're usually restricted to just Liberty Ranch and Galt.  Okay, so. I have here my website and it will be posted on there... All of the information, as well as the applications will be posted on there, so. You know... make sure that you start looking, starting mid-January. If you forget the website, you can also find the scholarships.  You can follow this link: wearelibertyranch.com ...   Go to Students, and then Career Announcements... and it will lead you directly to my website.  Okay. And, if you got any questions, make sure that you ask me.  You can either email me or you can set up an appointment through Ms. Luitze and we can have a Zoom talk or a phone conversation. How do you apply for this financial aid?  So I've been mentioning the FAFSA or the CADA (the California Dream Act) It opened up October 1st and, again, I mentioned that it closes March 2nd. Please do not wait until the last moment. Okay... because what you want is... You want to make sure that you get that in as soon as possible.  You will need your parent's 2019 tax returns... and yours too if its applicable to you... and then make sure that you have your parent's W-2s... so that when it asks the question about "How much did parent one make?", "How much do parents two make?", you can you can specify accordingly how much they each made.  Okay. And then the most important thing (don't forget this one) is the FSAID... so when you go on to the website, which I will show you in a little while, you will need to create that FSAID... one for you (student) and one for your parent. Okay.   It doesn't have to be both parents, just one is going to be just fine. This will be used as your electronic signature, so it's really important that you create this ahead of time. Alright.  As promised, fafsa.gov looks like this. You know the thing is they shortened the FAFSA address so it's pretty easy to remember fafsa.gov and then you start where it says "Start Here".  Okay. And if you've already done the FAFSA, then you can always log in to correct any of the things that you need to update... or anything like that. On the right hand side is the DREAM Act Application (the CADAA) so that one... that's what it looks like... and when you login for the CADAA you do not need an FSAID.  Okay.  Let me repeat that.  If you are going to do the CADAA, the California Dream Act, please do not create an FSAID. If you are doing the FAFSA, go ahead and create an FSAID. Okay, so. So what will you need in order to create an FSAID? So remember I told you both students and parents need to do this, right... so that you could sign your application. Just go ahead... go to the website that we've indicated here to create your FSAID.  They'll ask you for Social Security number and it'll ask you for a working email address. That is so important.  Please make sure that the numbers are all correct and that you've got an email that you check regularly. All right.   So when you create an FSAID, it looks like this... and, like I said, confirm your email, your username... It may look a little bit different.  Sometimes they do change it, but it's the same thing.  It's going to ask for a working email address and then it's going to ask you to create a password. Okay. The California Dream Act Application... who applies through that?   So, if you attended a California high school for three (3) or more years you're eligible.  Okay. If you don't have a Social Security number, that's fine, you can use this one. You have to either graduate from the high school, which I'm sure all of you will, and if you've got a GED you also qualify.  So come check with me if you've got any questions regarding the CADAA and I'll be more than happy to help you through it. What are some of the important dates that are coming up?  Well on October 26th at 2pm there's a Financial Aid 101 (it's learning the basics of financial aid) and then also October 28th that gives tips on filling out FAFSA.   Just some helpful hints to get you through the process... and then also in February I am going to have one of our community partners come in and give another tutorial on the FAFSA and CADAA. Please make sure that you attend one of these so that you're aware of what Financial Aid is all about and how to fill out the documents and all of that. It's so important.. and of course you could always ask me, you canask Ms. Vitoria, you can ask Ms. Hays. And with that, we're done with the presentation.  I just wanted to give you some idea of what to expect next because I'm sure that a lot of you are applying to colleges now.  There are a lot of colleges that are opened, especially their CSU (for applications). The Los Rios Community College system is open for applications and then UC will soon follow November 1st.
