I am so happy to have joined the Galt Joint Union High School District family, and to be selected as your new superintendent! Together, we have many years of important work ahead of us. I can’t think of any work more vital to our future than developing today the young people who will become the citizens of tomorrow. This is our calling and our stewardship—passing the torch to the next generation made capable and educated through our collective efforts. Ours is a crucial partnership: school board, parents, staff, teachers, and students together. What an exciting challenge!
I came to Galt with my personal and professional goals interwoven. Much of my 30 years as an educator has been in service to high schools. I was a teacher, vice principal, and principal in high schools prior to my service at the district level. Our work in high schools is most compelling in that we are the last, best common preparation for college, career, and life. The opportunity to lead this high school district brought me home. Seeing the incredible work done in Galt by providing a rich variety of opportunities and pathways for students was impressive.
Even more impressive was the community of Galt. Instantly, I felt at home, and have been made to feel welcome by everyone I have encountered in these first weeks here. It is a community that shares my values and aspirations. I have raised my own children in a community very much like Galt: small and rural, anchored in agriculture and small town values. There, my family has thrived. Galt is much like that—rooted in agriculture, proud of its past, focused on its youth and their aspirations, caring and supportive in a community that is really more of an extended family. What better place is there for our students to grow and develop? I am glad that I am here.
The immediate work ahead is to solidify important steps we have taken in recent months and years to establish an innovative, student-centered block scheduling system; new, more rigorous graduation requirements for better college and career preparation; and continuing the significant facilities modernization and improvements made possible by Measure E. I plan to spend time in the coming weeks and months to listen, learn, and observe to determine what should be our next steps on the road ahead for the Galt Joint Union High School District. Personally, I am driven each day by two overarching themes. One is “ready.” Our work is to make our kids ready—college ready, career ready, citizenship ready, family ready, community ready, and world ready. This is our crucial and daily work. The other theme is “better.” Ours should be a relentless pursuit of improvement. We are moving in the right direction if we are always looking to be better at what we do and who we are. And we pass this on to our kids. So for me, “ready” and “better” guide my efforts and aspirations for all of us.
I look forward to an outstanding year for all of us, and am excited to be here and to soon have the opportunity to meet each of you. Together, I know we will create schools and pathways for our students that will foster their success and continue to make us all proud.
Have a great year!
